Rabbi Zalman Melamed, Dean of the Beit El Yeshiva, has called for a new conscription law in Israel that would require anyone not engaged in full-time Torah study to enlist in the military. He emphasized that, according to religious law, participation in a war of self-preservation is mandatory for everyone, regardless of their study status. Rabbi Melamed clarified that only those who maintain rigorous study schedules should receive deferments, while others, including many in the haredi community, should be obligated to serve. He urged haredi leaders and public figures to support this stance and acknowledge the need for conscription among those not studying full-time.
