A tanker caught fire near the Strait of Hormuz after being struck on its starboard side by an unknown projectile, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. The vessel was about 31 nautical miles northwest of Dubai at the time of the incident. All crew members were reported safe and accounted for, and no environmental damage was observed.
On the same day, a Greek-owned container ship sailing near Ras Tanura off the coast of Saudi Arabia reported two separate incidents in which projectiles splashed into the water nearby. The attacks occurred within an hour of each other, and the crew was unharmed.
Commercial shipping in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz has faced increased threats following military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran in late February. No group has claimed responsibility for the latest incidents, though Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had previously claimed an earlier attack on the same container ship.
