Juan Orlando Hernandez, the former president of Honduras, has publicly praised United States President Donald Trump for his support of conservative candidate Nasry Asfura in the ongoing Honduran presidential election. Hernandez, recently pardoned by Trump and released from a lengthy prison sentence in the United States, claims that Trump's actions have influenced political sentiment in Honduras, leading to a rejection of leftist ideology.

The election remains contentious, with Asfura holding a narrow lead amid allegations of fraud and technical failures in vote counting. The ruling party, led by leftist president Xiomara Castro, has dismissed the provisional results and accused Trump of interfering in the electoral process through his backing of Asfura and the pardon of Hernandez.

Hernandez maintains that his conviction in the United States was politically motivated and orchestrated by the previous administration. He has not disclosed his future plans, expressing concern for his family's safety and suggesting that returning to Honduras could expose him to renewed legal and personal threats.
